The Hindu, Kauvery Hospitals will organise an awareness walk today
With tobacco use being recognised as the most preventable cause of death today, there is a need for increasing awareness of cutting down on smoking and smokeless tobacco.
The Hindu in association with Kauvery Hospitals will organise a walk to spread awareness of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on Friday.
The awareness walk will commence at Kauvery Hospitals, Cantonment, around 5 p.m. and is expected to reach Bishop Heber School, Puthur, by 6. 30 p.m.
Students and volunteers from the hospital participating in the walk will highlight various health risks associated with tobacco use and advocate policies to reduce tobacco consumption. V.P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, will flag off the walk.
The event carries a focus on this year’s theme ‘Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship’.
All the countries who have signed the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control are required to enforce comprehensive ban of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship within five years.
Research has shown banning promotion or advertising of smoking as an effective way to bring down the number of new smokers and also reduce tobacco demand.
