Virudhunagar, Collector M. Balaji unfurled the national flag, took the salute and guard of honour presented by the police here on Thursday.

The Collector honoured freedom fighters with shawls. He presented Chief Minister's medal to 38 head-constables and handed over certificate of appreciation to seven Government officers/employees for meritorious service.

A driver with the Revenue Department who has put in 25 years of accident-free service was honoured with a cash award of Rs. 500 and a certificate. Mr. Balaji distributed several benefits under various welfare schemes worth Rs. 6.86 lakh to 64 persons.

Students from several schools presented cultural programmes.

District Superintendent of Police Najmul Hoda, District Revenue Officer C.A. Raman, Revenue Divisional Officers Subbulakshmi (Sivakasi) and Arumainayagam Varagunaraj (Aruppukottai) participated.

Kalasalingam University

Chancellor K. Sridharan hoisted the National Flag at the 63rd Republic Day celebration at Kalasalingam University. He also gave away medals to the National Cadet Corps cadets. Chairman of the varsity T. Kalasalingam, Vice-Chancellor S. Radhakrishnan, and Registrar T. Vasudevan were present.
