Vinayaga Chathurthi was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in different parts of the district. People offered special prayers to Lord Vinayaga in all the temples by offering garlands of ‘arugampul’ on Wednesday.

As many as 2,000 eco-friendly idols have been installed across the district. The idols would be immersed in water bodies for three days from September 21 at Kanyakumari, Sothavilai, Chinnavilai, Sanguthurai, Pallikondan dam, Vettumadai, Midalam, Thengapattinam, near Thirparappu falls and Tamirabarani river.

The police have made elaborate security arrangements and deployed as many as 1,200 police personnel in the sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents. The police have directed various Hindu outfits to adhere to the rules and regulations in connection with installing and immersing the idols. The Vinayaga Chathurthi procession would be taken out in the routes permitted by the police. The idols would be installed at places as were done last year to perform pujas.

The organisers of the procession should ensure that the idols were made of clay and a five-member committee should take care of the idols in their respective places.
