District records 81 per cent pass percentage, well above State average
VILLUPURAM: Villupuram district's pass percentage in this year's secondary school examinations is 81 per cent well above the State average of 77.6 per cent.
Of the 36,270 students who appeared for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate and Oriental School Leaving Certificate examinations, 29,306 passed.
Chief Educational Officer S. Kannappan told The Hindu that for the past five years the district had been improving its performance in 2001, the pass percentage had been just 48 per cent.
The Education Department prepared a question bank with questions from the March 2005 examinations, special examinations held for tsunami-affected students in April 2005 and the instant examinations in July 2005.
The booklet was circulated among teachers.
The department had also organised crash courses for teachers on skill development with the help of resource persons from Anna University. The teachers conducted special coaching classes for slow-learners.
Supply of adequate educational aids and motivating students had enabled Villupuram district to shed the image of being an educationally backward district, Mr. Kannappan said.
The Parent-Teachers Associations too conducted evening classes in the rural areas, enabling the government schools located in remote areas such as Paithanthurai, Eraiyur and Vanur to achieve 100 per cent results.
Four Adi Dravida Welfare Schools at Kondamur in Tindivanam taluk, V. Salai in Villupuram, and Maniyarpalayam and Vellimalai in the Kalrayan Hills were among the 74 schools that got cent per cent results, Mr. Kannappan said.
