KARAIKAL: A Village Knowledge Centre was inaugurated here at Kalikuppam village recently. The VKC had been set up jointly by the people of Kalikuppam and the New Earth Welfare Association, an alumnus body of Pondicherry Engineering College with the support of M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and the District administration.

The VKC envisaged “social change” by filling knowledge gaps in a village milieu. VKC would provide information on daily news, weather, sea conditions and also information on employment opportunities, health. It would also host a library along with computers, and provide for newspapers, government pamphlets and information charts. The Revenue Department had contributed loud speakers for information dissemination.

VKC would provide capacity building training through various agencies to students, women and fisherfolk. It would also establish and facilitate linkages with numerous service agencies both in the government and non-governmental field.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Director of Fisheries urged the people to use the VKC for knowledge creation and dissemination to bring about a marked change in their living standards. Further, Commissioner, Kottucherry Commune, assured of all administrative assistance for the Centre. Jamsedji Tata National Virtual Academy fellows shared their experience in running a similar VKC in Agalangannu village in Karaikal.
