To 100 babies of southern districts born on his birthday
MADURAI: ‘Pengal Nattin Kangal’ scheme has been introduced to alleviate the worry of poor parents in marrying off their daughters, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Vijayakant, has said.
He was here to give away Life Insurance Corporation policy documents of Rs. 10,000 invested for the benefit of 100 babies of southern districts born on his birthday (August 25).
Handy to the poor
“The return on the investment (made in Market Plus policy of LIC) would be not less than Rs. 1.5 lakh after 20 years. It will come handy and you (the poor parents) need not seek anyone’s help during the daughter’s marriage,” he said.
Stating that he had been implementing various welfare measures on his birthday, celebrated as poverty alleviation day, he said that this scheme was introduced because of incidences of female infanticide as parents were apprehensive of offering huge sums as dowry.
Following popular appeal, he had planned to expand the programme next year, he said.
The party presidium chairman, S. Ramachandran, said that Mr. Vijayakant was really interested in the welfare of the poor and was not interested in achieving short-term political gains.
Premalatha Vijayakant said that the scheme would benefit all baby girls of the State when the DMDK came to power.
The party deputy secretary, S. Austin, was present.
