A new building of the primary health centre (PHC) at Velliyanur in Musiri taluk was declared open by T.P. Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, on Saturday.

Mr. Poonachi said health services were being extended through 61 rural PHCs in the district.

Velliyanur PHC that has got the new building at a cost Rs. 31.50 lakh serves a population of about 13,743.

Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said about 1,861 rural women in the age group of 30 to 35 in the district were found to have been affected by cervical cancer during screenings conducted through mobile units.

Breast cancer was detected in about 530 women and all of them were being provided follow-up treatment.

About one lakh sanitary napkins have been distributed to adolescents through anganwadi centres to ensure menstrual hygiene and check infection.

Over 6,000 benefitted

Over 6,000 persons have benefitted from the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme so far and they have been extended medical treatment worth Rs. 12.75 crore.
