Amid tight police security, counting of votes in the polls held to elect chairman for the Vellakoil third grade municipality will be held at Amala Annai Matriculation School at Vellakoil on Tuesday.
In the elections held on Sunday, a total of 70.84 per cent of the 26,868 electorate (male- 13,346, female- 13,521 female and others-1) exercised their franchise.
Official sources told The Hindu that of the total 19,034 votes polled, 9,647 were men and the rest women. The only voter under the ‘others' category did not cast the vote.
As many as 36 polling booths spread over 21 wards in the municipality were set up for the elections.
The polling started at a slow pace in the morning and gained momentum in the afternoon.
The elections for the post of chairman did not take place last month following the death of the DMK candidate in the fray.
Hence, a revised notification was issued by Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, exercising the powers under Tamil Nadu Town Panchayat, Municipalities and Corporation (Elections) Rule, 2006, to conduct the elections on Sunday.
A total of seven candidates including five Independents and one each representing AIADMK and BJP were in the fray this time.
