Driver, the lone traveller, escaped with minor injuries
CUDDALORE: A Tata Sumo vehicle entering Cuddalore from Puducherry on Monday hit a scanty barricade put up near the bridge built across the Then Pennaiyar here and plunged into a 25-ft deep pit.
However, driver Babu from Sirkazhi, who happened to be the lone traveller, escaped with minor injuries. He has been admitted to the Cuddalore headquarters government hospital for treatment.
The incident has brought to light the lack of safety measures on either side of the bridge, from the Kanganankuppam end and at the Alapakkam end.
Commuters are of the view that on both sides of the high-level bridge there are sharp curvatures with deep slopes, but with little protection.
Only stone slabs have been put up at long intervals which could hardly act as the sturdy barricade to prevent a speeding vehicle from rolling down the slopes.
Those familiar with the route would exercise caution but for others who choose to travel by night danger is lurking ahead.
Commuters opine that if reflectors are placed on the road side these would sufficiently alert the drivers.
Since the flow in the river is always quite substantial they hope that the authorities would take appropriate measures, such as raising a concrete protective wall at these points to prevent recurrence of such mishaps.
