Tension gripped the town for sometime on Friday as a group of supporters of the Samooga Neethi Kootamiappu attempted to remove the barricade near a marriage hall at Thilagar Thidal protesting against a meeting convened by Anaithu Samuthaya Periyakkam.

Dr. Ramadoss, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader, was to address the meeting.

The supporters of the Kootamaippu were taken to the Police Community Hall at the Armed Reserve police grounds.

Some of the protesters threw stones at a group of cars proceeding towards the marriage hall.

A section of Kottaimaippu resorted to “road roko” near the Government Hospital, protesting against what they called the “police excess” in arresting them.

Police officials pacified them and restored them at the Police Community Hall.

Dr. Ramadoss later told presspersons that the Periyakkam was fighting for the cause of all sections of the society and was above any caste-based bias.
