Coimbatore: Activists of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday condemning the arrests and detention of those who supported the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils.
Activists led by Susi Kalaiarasan and Thennarasu flayed the arrests of its cadre and the detention of 26 persons under the Goondas Act. The demonstrators also criticised the decision to arrest Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam leader Kolathur S Mani, Film Director Seeman and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Nanjil Sampath for supporting the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils. The demonstrators also flayed the decision to detain them under National Security Act and wanted the cases to be withdrawn.
A section of advocates practicing in the District Sessions Court and Sub-Ordinate Judiciary staged a protest by bringing a donkey to the court complex. The advocates adorned the donkey with a shawl, garland and presented petitions. This was a part of agitations being staged by advocates following the clash between police personnel and lawyers at High Court premises in Chennai on February 19. They said that the agitation was to wake up a “sleeping judiciary”.
Fire delays train
