CHENNAI: Three major projects in Tamil Nadu were reviewed by Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K.Vasan on Wednesday.

The projects include a 500 mw, lignite-based thermal station and expansion of a second mine, both at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, and the Koodankulam Atomic Power Plant.

The total cost of these projects works out to Rs. 17,363 crore.

Talking to newspersons, Mr.Vasan said the projects would improve electricity supply in the State. He was confident that both the power project and second mine at the NLC would be completed by 2009. The Kudankulam project would become operational by December 2008.

According to NLC officials, the NLC power project was sanctioned in October 2004 at an estimated cost of Rs. 2030.73 crore. It is now in its initial stage. The entire power from the plant will be made available to Tamil Nadu.

The second mine was also sanctioned in October 2004 for expanding the mine operation from the present level of 10.5 million tonnes a year to 15 million tonnes at an estimated cost of Rs. 2161.28 crore.
