To play a `proactive role' in students' union polls

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers' Association (MUTA) has decided to play a `proactive role' in various diversified issues, including students' union elections, Indo-American nuclear deal, special economic zones and the Right to Information Act.

A decision was taken at the general council meeting of the association held here on Tuesday in which several resolutions were passed.

S. Vivekanandan, general secretary, in a press release said the association would conduct lectures, seminars and workshops on diversified topics like RTI Act, nuclear deal, SEZs, problems and prospects in fundamental sciences, how to win a project etc.

Mr. Vivekanandan said a demonstration and a 48-hour relay fast would soon be held at Dindigul to condemn the action taken by the management of a private college against the teaching and non-teaching staff and also students.

The general council meeting was presided over by V. Ponnuraj, MUTA president, the release said.
