Pondicherry University has completed the construction of three new buildings – a new library annexe, bioinformatics building and Educational Multimedia Research Centre. The buildings will be inaugurated on January 22.

The largest of the three buildings is the new library annexe, which has a built-up area of 50,000 square feet and has come up at a cost of around Rs. 10 crore.

The library building will house the Department of Library and Information Sciences.

It has an exclusive library for the visually challenged, a 24-hour reading room and a children’s library, according to Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen.

The Educational Multimedia Research Centre, assigned to the university by the Universities Grants Commission, would house the Media, Mass Communication and Electronic Media Departments and has come up at a cost of Rs. 8 crore. The building size is 40,000 square feet. The new building for National Centre for Bioinformatics, located near the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asian Regional Cooperation, is a 30,000 sq. feet facility.

All construction work has been completed and finishing touches are being given. The buildings should be ready for occupation in 10 to 15 days.

They would be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy.

With these three buildings, the total area of buildings constructed in the university in the past five years would be 15,00,000 sq. ft., Mr. Tareen said.
