MADURAI: The Sivaganga town police arrested ‘Varichiyur' Selvam on charges of criminal offence and produced him before a magistrate court on Monday. Following a complaint from Luman (23), son of Antony of Anaiyur, a case of trespass, criminal intimidation and threat was registered against Selvam.

According to preliminary inquiries, Selvam and two of his accomplices had allegedly threatened to part with the money he had advanced to Luman's family members in connection with purchase of a property from them two years ago. However, Selvam did not pay the money as agreed upon, but urged them to pay back the advance. Selvam had been to Sivaganga, where a wordy altercation between Luman and others resulted in lodging a complaint with the police. The police seized his four-wheeler.

Attempt to murder

Tallakulam police had registered a criminal case against Selvam few months ago after he threatened a women's hostel warden with dire consequences. While the police were on the lookout for him, he obtained anticipatory bail.

A senior police officer in the south zone said Selvam was detained in the Goondas Act in the past as he had indulged in grave offences.
