VIRUDHUNAGAR: A village administrative officer, Sermakani, has been placed under suspension for allegedly collecting money from those who applied to benefit under the Chief Minister’s Insurance Scheme.

In a statement, the Collector, Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, said that the VAO of Thummuchinnampatti near Aruppukottai had collected Rs. 30 towards “application fee” while identifying beneficiaries. However, she returned the money to the people after a Tahsildar’s intervention following complaints from the people. Based on the Collector’s directive, the Aruppukottai Revenue Divisional Officer, Ganesan, conducted an enquiry revealing that the VAO indulged in collecting money. The Collector had asked the VAOs to act honestly while processing applications for the insurance scheme realising that the scheme was to help the poor.
