New facility opened at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University

TIRUNELVELI: The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University added one more facility on Thursday when the Chairman of Sakthi Group of Companies, N. Mahalingam, inaugurated the Ramasubbaiyer Krishnamurthy Media Block, donated by the Editor of `Dinamalar,' R. Krishnamurthy.

The 10,000-sqft block, established at the cost of Rs. 60 lakh, would be used for M.A. Communication, M.Sc. Electronic Media, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.

When the studio at this new facility becomes operational, it would help in carrying out live telecasts and uplink educational programmes. The building also encompasses the proposed Edusat Satellite Interactive Terminal Station.

Mr. Mahalingam said that earnest initiatives should be taken to increase the number of well-equipped universities in the country while empowering them with more autonomy and authority.

Board of Management should be created in all universities in which leading industrialists could be included as office-bearers and members so that funds for new projects of the universities would not be a constraint.

The publisher of `Dinamalar,' R. Lakshmipathi, told the university authorities to design a need-based curriculum to give the students an edge over others in the highly competitive job market.

He also stressed the need for updating the syllabus periodically.

The Vice-Chancellor, Cynthia Pandian, and Mr. Krishnamurthy appealed to leading industrialists in the southern districts to donate liberally to strengthen infrastructure facilities of the varsity.

The former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, V.Ai. Subramaniam, the former Editor of `Dinamani,' Iravatham Mahadevan, and the former Vice-Chancellor of the university, K.P. Aravaanan, spoke.

The Registrar, P. Chellathurai, welcomed the gathering and the Head of Department of Communication, P. Govindaraju, proposed a vote of thanks.
