MDMK general secretary Vaiko and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant on Monday demanded suspension of policemen who were facing charges of sexually assaulting four tribal women from Mandapam village in Villupuram district.

“The case registered against them is just an eyewash. They should be suspended from service and the victims should be given relief,” Mr Vaiko said in a statement. The case is related to detention of four Irula tribal women in connection with a theft case against Kasi, the husband of one of the women.

Kasi was picked up by police and even as the interrogation was going on, the police went to his home took four women to their custody. They had then taken them to the nearby forest and had sexually assaulted them.

Questioning why the police failed to take with them women constables for questioning the women, Mr Vaijayakant said the police action was unjustified since they picked up the women in the night against rules.

He said the truth would come out if the police inspector was interrogated.
