"The move will deprive people of Vellore district of water"

VELLORE: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has criticised the United Progressive Alliance Government for its "failure" to prevent Andhra Pradesh beginning work on the construction of a dam across the Palar in Kuppam.

Campaigning for MDMK candidate for Vellore N. Subramani at a meeting held here on Wednesday night, Mr. Vaiko said the people of Vellore district feared that the move of Andhra Pradesh would deprive them of water.

"Why has not the Congress-led UPA Government asked Andhra Pradesh to stop the construction? And why has not Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi bothered about it at all"?

Mullaperiyar issue

Mr. Vaiko also faulted the UPA Government for not preventing the Congress regime in Kerala from passing a resolution in the Assembly not to increase the height of the Mullaperiyar dam to nullify the Supreme Court's verdict asking it to raise the height of the dam.

Mr. Vaiko blamed the previous DMK regime for having increased the price of rice under the public distribution system and the Manmohan Singh Government for having cut the food subsidy by Rs.4,524 crores. "Is it not a fraud on the people of Tamil Nadu on the part of Mr.Karunanidhi in having made a poll promise of supplying rice at Rs.2 a kg after having acquiesced in the UPA Government's decision to cut the food subsidy?"

He accused Mr. Karunanidhi of preventing the Centre from granting Rs.13,000 crore sought by Chief Minister Jayalalitha for tsunami relief and rehabilitation. He (Mr.Vaiko), along with four party MPs, met the Prime Minister and sought an immediate grant of Rs.1,300 crore. But, the Centre granted only Rs.500 crore. When Ms. Jayalalitha met the Prime Minister and sought the fund, he immediately announced the grant of another Rs.500 crore. "This could not be tolerated by Mr. Karunanidhi who prevented sanction of more funds to Tamil Nadu for tsunami relief."
