CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Friday appeared before a sessions court here in connection with a defamation complaint against him.

Principal District and Sessions Judge V. Periya Karuppiah adjourned the matter to April 19. The City Public Prosecutor filed the complaint, taking exception to reported allegations of Mr. Vaiko that Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi had hatched a conspiracy to disrupt MDMK party meetings and interfere with its internal affairs. The complaint, filed on behalf of the Government, said senior DMK leaders and others were shocked by the news item published in an English daily on December 25, and that the "defamatory article" caused a direct imputation to Mr. Karunanidhi and seriously tarnished his image.
