Students of the Government Arts College for Women here participated in various competitions organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Public Welfare Association on the college premises recently. The competitions – essay writing, poem composing, elocution, painting and singing – were conducted to bring out hidden talents among youth and motivate them to develop their individual talents. R. Sumanthi Devi, principal, Government Arts College for Women, urged students to take advantage of such opportunities to build their overall personality. Prof. Sumanthi Devi encouraged students to develop self confidence . M. Selvasekaran, the coordinator of the competitions and assistant headmaster of the Crescent Higher Secondary School, Avaniapuram, said that younger generation should utilise every platform available . Recalling achievements of great scholars like Va. Suba. Manickam, K. V. Balasubramanian, poets Suratha and Kannadasan, he urged the students to read their works.

Poet Kannadasan was known for his literary style and Suratha chose best words and presented them in the best order in his poetry. Students should try to emulate world renowned orators like Cicero, Demosthenes, Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Ingersoll. M. Mahalingam, president of Mahatma Gandhi Public Welfare Association, felicitated. Prof. Sumanthi Devi gave away prizes.
