Collector’s advice to farmers

NAGAPTTINAM: Farmers in the Cauvery delta region must make use of farm implements provided by the Agricultural Engineering Department and adopt efficient water management practices, said M. Jayaraman, Collector, here on Saturday.

Addressing a water management training seminar for farmers in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district organised by the Agricultural Engineering department, the Collector said that the district administration had taken steps to desilt irrigation channels and also drainage carriers to ensure free flow of water for irrigation after the release of water from the Mettur reservoir for irrigation.

Mr. Jayaraman appealed to the farmers to take up summer ploughing of agricultural lands that would help reduce water requirement for irrigation. He pointed out that there were 96 irrigation gram sabhas in the district of which 82 were functioning very well and the farmers in the villages took up desilting work of irrigation channels in their respective villages.

The Agriculture Engineering Department was providing several farm implements such as harvester, transplanter and thrasher at 50 per cent subsidy, he said and asked farmers to make use of the opportunity and buy them. By adopting latest technologies, including system of rice intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation, the farmers could achieve a good yield, he said.

The Collector urged the farmers to use organic manure for increasing the paddy yield and to reduce pest attack on crops. There was an urgent need to desilt the drainage carriers to prevent floods during northeast monsoon, he added.

A large number of farmers and officials from Agriculture, Agriculture Engineering and Public Works departments participated in the meeting.
