Lodged in different prisons across the State, they had passed Standard X examinations

CHENNAI: Inmates lodged in different prisons across the State who passed in Standard X examinations were felicitated by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Member E. Balagurusamy at a function held at the Puzhal Central Prison on Friday.

According to Director-General of Police (Prisons) R. Natraj, three life convicts who passed in first class were given a special reward. “We gave books, sweet boxes and cash award to all the candidates (prisoners) who passed the examination. We are encouraging them to continue their studies.”

He said that artificial limbs were given to three prisoners, including a woman. V. Krishnan, director of Mohana Orthiotics in Chennai, donated the advanced artificial limbs to the physically challenged prisoners. Sudha, a girl who lost both her limbs in a train accident and was arrested in connection with an offence later, was also a beneficiary.

Mr. Natraj said saplings were planted to mark the World Environment Day.
