The Tamil Maanila Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the Communist Party of India, has urged the Health Department to upgrade the Pappayi Achi Government Hospital in Ponnamaravathy into a government taluk headquarters hospital and appoint additional doctors and paramedical personnel to cater to the health care needs of the people.
At its meeting held at Ponnamaravathy on Wednesday, a resolution adopted in this regard said the hospital, catered to a large number of villagers, particularly pregnant women. Over the years, the number of gynaecologists had been reduced from four to one. Another resolution urged the Public Works Department to clear the silt in the irrigation channels.
In a resolution, they urged the government to pay a monthly pension of Rs. 3,000 each to agricultural labourers and grant house site pattas. The meeting, through a resolution, wanted efforts to regulate traffic in Ponnamaravathy town.
T. Sengodan, district secretary of the CPI, in his address, said the need for prompt disbursement of wages to labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
