The members of Tamil Nadu Unorganised Workers' Federation, Tuticorin, staged a demonstration here on Tuesday pressing a charter of demands to be fulfilled by the State Government.
Spearheading the agitation in front of Rajaji Park, M. Krishnamurthy, District Coordinator of the Federation, said the unorganised sector had been totally ignored by the Tamil Nadu budget. The labour of the working class under the sector was invaluable and the government should extend enhanced benefits through various welfare schemes, he said.
With hard work of labourers under the unorganised sector, Tuticorin was emerging with hectic activities in salt industry and seafood industry but they were devoid of social security. Each of the unorganised workers should be entitled to receive pension benefits of Rs. 3,000, maternity assistance of Rs.12,000, accident relief assistance of Rs. 2 lakh and for natural death Rs.50,000. The unorganised working sector should not be brought under the control of revenue officials.
