MADURAI: Retired government officials, Judges, and University Vice-Chancellors belonging to Kallar, Maravar and Agamudaiyar castes who are also part of Pasumpon Thevar Educational Research and Charitable Public Trust have planned to establish a university in the name of the late freedom fighter U. Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in Sivaganga district.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, A.N. Dhyaneswaran, former Civil Services Officer and Secretary of the trust, said that southern districts are communally sensitive with frequent caste clashes and were also backward with fewer avenues for educational development.

To dispel this lacuna, the trust has planned to initiate educational development in this area and have chosen the district.

Stating that the proposed university is to be established at an estimated cost of Rs.10 crore in three year’s time and efforts are on to collect donations to build the infrastructure.

The foundation stone for the proposed university was laid in Chennai by S.Thirunavukkarasar, national secretary, Bharatiya Janata Party, in the presence of R.Velu, former Union Minister of State for Railways (who resigned on Saturday) and was presided over by R. Auvudaiappan, Speaker, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

The trust members also said that they drew inspiration from the efforts of Vanniar Sangam’s Educational Trust for a deemed university at Konerikuppam, near Tindivanam.
