107{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of N. M. R. Subbaraman celebrated

Industrialist N. Mahalingam, Chairman of Sakthi Group of Companies, Coimbatore, and the Chairman of Gandhi Memorial Museum, has proposed the creation of a deemed university in memory of N. M. R. Subbaraman, a Congress leader who was fondly known as ‘Madurai Gandhi.’ Such a university will address the shortage of quality institutions of higher education. He was addressing the 107{+t}{+h}birth anniversary celebrations of Mr. Subbaraman organised at the Gandhi Memorial Museum here on Friday by Tamil Nadu Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and Madurai Gandhi Mandram.

Besides having held the position of Chairman of the Madurai Municipality, he was also elected to the Lok Sabha from the Madurai Parliamentary Constituency in 1962.

Mr. Mahalingam also noted that Mr. Subbaraman worked alongside tall leaders such as Vaidynatha Iyer, who spearheaded the temple entry movement for dalits, and U. Muthuramalinga Thevar, the leader of the All India Forward Bloc.

R. Rengasamy, Secretary of Gandhi Museum, said that Mr. Subbaraman set exemplary standards of integrity in public and political life.
