Bharathiar University had received a grant of Rs.7 crore under the XI Five Year Plan as the third instalment of the development grant.

According to Vice-Chancellor G. James Pitchai, the amount will be utilised for the construction of women’s hostel, infrastructure for sports, teaching and learning facilities for differently-abled and other programmes.

Another grant of Rs. 2 crore under the XII Five Year Plan will be utilised next year for the purchase of books and journals and common equipment.

A common computing centre to support research scholars will be established soon. All modern software for data analysis will be available at the centre and research scholars from affiliated colleges too can make use of this facility, he said.

New programmes

With the support of Tata Consultancy Services and HCL, new programmes for commerce and business management students will be offered as industry-institution collaboration. In the next few months, the university expected to conduct aptitude tests for over 50,000 students to prepare them for entry-level jobs.

This will hep the university to map the knowledge and skill deficiency of students to design appropriate training programmes that will increase employment opportunities for students.
