COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Thanganagai Thozhilalar Sangham, affiliated to the CITU, plans to organise a demonstration here this month, opposing the common service centre proposal for the jewellery sector here.
A release said about 50,000 workers were employed in the jewellery-making units here and most of them were cottage industries.
Earlier, jewellery manufacturers and traders planned to undertake a cluster programme for the jewellery sector. However, the workers opposed it as they were apprehensive that the project would result in unemployment and the proposal was dropped.
The workers were not receiving minimum wages and were not getting help to purchase equipment. The cluster programme would affect the workers since it aimed at using machines for making jewellery.
With the fluctuating gold prices, the workers were paid low wages. The common service centre would hit the workers, the release said.
