CHENNAI: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Monday called on the Arakkonam bus accident victims, who have been admitted to the Government General Hospital here.
Mr. Velu, the Lok Sabha MP from Arakkonam, enquired after their health and spoke to the attending doctors about the treatment.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening after the front tyre of the bus burst and the vehicle jumped the bridge and fell into Kallar riverbed.
Sugumar, the driver of the ill-fated bus run by a private company, is among the injured admitted to the GH. He said he braked and to avoid a lorry in the front tried to swerve but the steering wheel would not work. "It is a narrow bridge and I was not driving fast."
Basheer of Velur, who learnt of the accident from the television news on Sunday night, rushed to Chennai where eight members of his family were brought. One of them has been admitted to Government Stanley Hospital while the rest are in GH.
Of the 29 victims admitted to the GH, 28 are in the emergency wards while one is in the neurology ward. Most of the victims have suffered multiple fractures. Some have suffered head injuries. The injured admitted to the GH include three children and six women.
