SALEM: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomous status to the Government Arts College on Cherry Road.
The Periyar University, the affiliating institution, would also give its clearance in this regard after getting the approval of the syndicate shortly.
The college could enjoy the status from the coming academic year, College Principal M.N. Chandrasekaran said. Earlier, an expert committee from the UGC assessed the infrastructure facilities and academic activities of the college and made recommendations for giving it the autonomous status.
The status would enable the college to offer courses, frame syllabus, conduct examinations and declare results on its own for students admitted from the coming academic year. However, the university would award the degree, college sources said.
Meanwhile, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council re-accredited the college with B++ Grade recently.
