For starting new courses

TIRUCHI: The Association of University Teachers has urged the University Grants Commission to extend by a month the last date announced for universities and affiliated colleges to start postgraduate courses, PG diploma courses, and undergraduate courses with financial assistance under the UGC 10th Plan scheme of Human Rights and Values in Education.

N. Baskaran, State Treasurer, AUT, said the stipulation of the last date as September 30 was too short a time for finalising a PG course for the current academic year.

Seeking extension for submitting proposals up to the end of October, with a provision to start the courses in the beginning of next year, Prof. Baskaran said only then can the universities and colleges be able to make the best use of the scheme, besides imparting meaningful education through the courses.

Since the 10th Plan comes to an end on March 31, 2007, assistance under the scheme should be made available under the 11th Plan also for courses started under the 10th Plan and continued in the 11th Plan, Prof. Baskaran insisted.
