TIRUNELVELI: Two persons were killed and two others injured in an accident at Maaraanthai near Alangulam on Monday.
Police said the paddy harvester, loaded on a lorry, dashed against the driver’s cabin when the lorry driver M. Muthukumar of Sembulaavayal in Pudukottai district suddenly applied brake.
Consequently, the lorry hit a roadside tree and came to a halt even as the harvester fell down and overturned.
While Y. Kaalamurthy (28) of Ammanpuram in Tuticorin district was killed on the spot as he was trapped beneath the harvester, M. Ramesh (19) of Maayamaankurichi died on the way to the hospital.
S. Sudhakar (23) of Adaimithippaankulam near Palayamkottai and K. Pandi (39) of K. Royapuram in Pudukottai district have been admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital with grievous injuries.
The Alangulam police have registered a case.
Dies of burns
A sixth standard girl student died of burns at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday.
Police said V. Veni (12) of Vadakarai under Gangaikondan police station limit suffered burns when she, along with some of her friends, was burning the garbage in her village on February 21.
A 9th standard student committed suicide by consuming poison on Monday after his parents reportedly pressurised him to go to school regularly.
Police said M. Mahendrakumar (14) of Sevalkulam under Kuruvikulam police station limit died on the way to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.
The Kuruvikulam police have registered a case and are investigating.
