In a surprise raid on vehicles on Wednesday, Transport Department officials seized two lorries laden with stone boulders over and above the capacity.
The boulders were being transported from a quarry at Mangudi near here to the port in Karaikal. Against the permissible capacity of 16 tonnes, each lorry had boulders weighing about 38 tonnes.
N.Balagurunathan, Regional Transport Officer, who conducted the raid, said that the boulders were taken for checking sea erosion. The owner of a lorry, with a Karnataka registration, was fined Rs.24,000 at the rate of Re.1per kg for the excess load. The owner of the second lorry, with Tamil Nadu registration, was ordered to pay a fine of Rs.6,000.
The seizure was effected in the wake of the serious threat posed by such transporters to the public safety. "Apart from overturning, the boulders posed a danger to the safety of the other vehicles," Mr. Balagurunathan said.
C.Sivakumar, Motor Vehicle Inspector, Aranthangi, said that the action was initiated under Sec.114 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
