Occurred at cracker making unit

ERODE: Two persons, including a woman, were charred to death on the spot and another person sustained serious burns in a cracker unit explosion.

According to the police, Ramasamy of Ammapalayam near Chennimalai, Perundurai taluk, is a licence holder for production of crackers meant for temple festivals. He used to produce mainly the `Vanam' (rocket) variety of crackers.

On Saturday evening three persons, Gurusamy (33), his wife Sumathy (27), both belonging to Vellakoil area, and another person Ravi (25), were engaged in producing some crackers when suddenly they exploded.

Sumathy and Ravi were burnt to death on the spot and Gurusamy, who sustained serious burns, was shifted to Erode Government Headquarters Hospital.

The cracker manufacturing unit is located just behind Ramasamy's house and the unit was being run in a thatched shed. Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Ramasamy is absconding.

Superintendent of Police Ms Sonal S. Misra visited the place. Chennimalai police are investigating.
