Tuticorin: Two persons, D. Jagadish Kumar (28) and L. Alwin (34) of Indira Nagar here, were arrested near the fishing harbour here on Thursday on charges of selling a green turtle (Chelonia Mydas).
According to the Forest Range Officer, S. Pichaiya, acting on a tip off, Wildlife officials in association with Coastal Security Group personnel conducted a raid in the early hours of Thursday and recovered the marine being along with a fishing boat.
A case has also been filed against Malaiyarasan (alias) Anto of Lions town, the owner of the boat.
A. Murugan, Senior Lecturer, Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute, said the green turtle was one among the rare species with its habitat in the Gulf of Mannar.
It weighs over 100 kg measuring 110 cm in length and 101 cm in breadth. “Marine plants are the ideal source of food for the turtle.
