DINDIGUL: The Department of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officials arrested two officials in district supply office at Collectorate here on Wednesday on the charges of accepting bribe in connection with a rice smuggling case, according to police.

The arrested were Shivashanmugam, assistant in district supply office and Revenue Inspector of supply office flying squad Natarajan.

They had agreed to issue letter confirming that the rice smuggled by Jayaraman and his three friends was not the rice meant for PDS but only for distribution under Food for Work scheme.

Both had demanded Rs.15,000 for issuing the letter.

A special flying squad had seized one lorry laden with rice meant for public distribution system at Odanchatram on January 2, 2010 and a case was filed against Jayaraman, Sekar, Jayakumar and Dhanush on the charges of smuggling ration rice to Pollachi.

The case was pending before District Revenue Officer as the accused argued that the rice was not meant for PDS and only for Food for Work scheme.

They had to produce a letter from these officials to confirm it.

The duo demanded money to confirm it in favour of the accused in this case, the police added.
