: The police arrested two youths for attempting to rape a 40-year-old woman at Olugamangalapati in the Nerkuppai Police limit on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police said that the woman was going to a field when the youths, identified as J.Selvam (21) and C.Arulkumar (23) from the same village, tried to molest her. As she raised an alarm, they ran away from the scene.

The woman, who suffered some bruises, was admitted to the government hospital here. She initially declined to lodge a complaint stating that “nothing had happened.”

However, when police investigation revealed that there was a clear attempt to rape her, she gave a complaint, based on which, the police registered a case against the duo under Section 376 and 511 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The two youths were arrested on Thursday night and remanded to judicial custody on Friday, the SP said. They hailed from the same village but have been living in Coimbatore as daily wage workers. They had come to the village only on Thursday for Pongal holidays, the SP added. He said the victim would be produced before a local Magistrate court on Monday.
