TAMBARAM: Tambaram police have arrested two men, one of them a local functionary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on charges of assaulting a police constable on duty at Mudichur Road on Saturday night.

Police said that the constable, Sundaram (40), was trying to pacify two men and an autorickshaw driver who were involved in a squabble, when the accused, Mohanraj, and his brother, Vijaykumar, assaulted him. Following a complaint, the two were arrested.

Public protest

Residents of Vengambakkam village near Tambaram gathered outside the Peerkankaranai police station on Sunday, protesting police action of picking up five villagers in a case relating to the alleged sale of government land.

Residents said that five of them were taken to the police station following a complaint that government land near the Vengambakkam lake was being attempted to be sold by a group of land sharks. Stating that the five persons, including a woman, had nothing to do with the issue, they assembled near the police station. Senior officials came to the spot, pacified the agitated residents and let the five people go. Police said that the issue would be taken up for investigation later.
