Two persons, both drivers, were killed on the spot and a cleaner was grievously injured when a tanker transporting acid collided with a stationary water tanker at Kamatchipuram near Thadikombu on Friday.

The deceased were K.Ramesh Kumar (40) of Tuticorin and K.Kannan (45) of Dindigul. The cleaner, Murugesan (35) of Dindigul, has been admitted to the Government Headquarters Hospital here with injuries. The police said the acid-laden tanker, going to Sivakasi from Mumbai, rammed into the water tanker parked on the four-lane highway for watering the plants on the median.

While Kannan, the driver of the water taker, was thrown out of the vehicle in the impact, Ramesh Kumar who was driving the acid-laden tanker, was crushed to death inside the cabin.

In the impact of the collision, the Sivakasi-bound tanker skidded and climbed the median.

The police and the local people did not go near the tanker fearing that it might explode. Later, the fire rescue and service personnel rescued the injured and struggled for hours to remove the body of Ramesh Kumar from the mangled remains of the vehicle.

Murugesan was watering the plants on the median when the accident happened.
