A woman and her son were killed when the car in which they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a State Transport Corporation bus at Savadipalayam near here on Wednesday morning.

Police sources said Maragatham (55), a resident of Panchalingapuram village in Modakurichi block, and her son Dinesh (35), who was working at an auditing firm in Karur, were on the way to Erode in a car, when the accident took place. Maragatham died on the spot. People in the area alerted the Fire and Rescue Services Department. A team of fire fighters cut open the damaged car to rescue Dinesh (35), who was trapped in the wreckage. He was admitted to a private hospital with serious injuries.

Dinesh, however, did not respond to the treatment and succumbed to wounds at the hospital in the afternoon.

Police sources said the driver of the bus reportedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve in the area.

Sharp curve

People in the area also said the sharp curve had resulted in a number of accidents and urged the authorities to install warning signs and speed breakers on either side of the road. Drivers lose control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate the curve, they said.

Modakurchi police registered a case.
