: Two persons were detained after they were allegedly caught distributing cash for votes to some residents in K. Pudur here on Sunday.

Police said that following a tip-off that some persons indulged in giving cash, a team rushed to the spot. Two persons who were caught confessed to having given away money to the voters in the locality. A total of Rs.67,385 was recovered. The money was being given at Ramalakshmi Nagar First Street, Alagar Nagar covering wards – 27 and 46.

The accused claimed that they were distributing on behalf of the AIADMK and DMK candidates contesting for the Madurai Corporation councillor posts. The K. Pudur police have registered a case for violating the model code of conduct and for distribution of money. Further investigation is on.

District Collector U. Sagayam appealed to the voters to desist from taking money and thanked the public for informing the authorities on time. The Collector urged the younger generation to take up a pro-active approach by turning out in large numbers and cast their votes.
