A 48-year-old man and his son were assaulted and robbed of 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery near Pudur village on the main road between Tirupattur and Alangayam on Tuesday evening.

According to Kurusilapet police, Biksingh and his son Rajendra Singh (24) of Gandhi Road in Alangayam were running a jewellery shop at Mittur. On Tuesday, they had closed the shop and were returning in a two-wheeler when a motorbike-borne gang intercepted them near Pudur village on Tirupattur to Alangayam main road at about 7.30 p.m.

Three men on two motorcycles had blocked the duo.

Noting that Biksingh was carrying a bag, the men asked him to give the bag assuming it contained jewels. As he refused to hand over the bag, one of the men attacked him with a knife, injuring his hand. Rajendra Singh, who intervened, was also assaulted. He sustained cut injuries on his hand.

The trio decamped with two chains and two bracelets that the father and son were wearing.

The jewels weighed 10 sovereigns.

The two have been admitted to a private medical college hospital in Vellore with injuries.
