Shiv Sena terms charge false and fabricated

DINDIGUL: Two persons were arrested on Wednesday on the charge of defacing the Periyar statue on the main road here.

The police registered cases under Section 153 and 290 of the Indian Penal Code against Shiv Sena district secretary V. Dharmaraja alias Dharmar of Indira Nagar and Thattuvandi Mani alias A. Mani Maran of Bharathipuramand. They were produced before Judicial Magistrate Court-II.

Shiv Sena State deputy secretary C.K. Balaji described the charge as "false and fabricated."

There are seven cases four with the Dindigul West police station and three with the South police station against Dharmaraja in connection with several offences.

He was detained under the Goondas Act in 2004.

Two cases were filed against Mani Maran in 2001 on the charges of assault and waylaying.

Unidentified persons smeared sandalwood paste on the forehead of the statue on August 27. Dravidar Kazhagam members picketed AMC Road the same day, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told the Assembly on Tuesday that stern action would be taken against the offenders.
