: M. Gnanavaram, principal, Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary here, has filed an anticipatory bail application at the Madras High Court Bench here in a sexual harassment case.

In his petition, Mr. Gnanavaram claimed that the complaint registered against him at S.S. Colony police station was false and that he did not misbehave with a girl student in 2009.

He also claimed that some of his colleagues who had lost a college election to him lodged a false case against him. Mr. Gnanavaram pointed out that the complaint was not lodged by the girl student, with whom he was alleged to have misbehaved, but by the faculty of the college. Justice P. Devadass adjourned the case to June 3 for hearing.

In her complaint with the S.S. Colony police on May 27, a 40-year-old research scholar from Manipur had said that the principal, who was her research guide, had made sexual advances to her more than once in 2009. She said in the complaint that when she resisted his move, he harassed her and humiliated her when she approached him for a University Grants Commission (UGC) scholarship. The principal was also charged with deliberately delaying her assessment papers. She said that the principal delayed processing her request seeking a transfer from TTS Madurai to Serampor in Kolkota to continue her studies.

After leaving TTS in February 2010, she came to know that Dr. Gnanavaram had sent back the UGC scholarship meant for her to the tune of Rs.6.50 lakh received in May, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He had illegally held the documents without informing her about grant of scholarship.
