Tuticorin: The Bishop of Tuticorin, Yvon Ambroise, handed over the keys of 81 permanent shelters built for tsunami-hit families at Kallamozhi near here, Collector R. Palaniyandi on Friday.

Mr. Palaniyandi told reporters that the houses were built by the administration with financial assistance from T.M.S. S. Society, a NGO, on 1.53 hectares of land provided by the Government. The buildings were constructed on a total outlay of Rs 163.62 lakh.

Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board had established a borewell, a pump room, an overhead water tank with 30,000 litre capacity and pipes for water distribution, all at a cost of Rs 12.6 lakh at the colony. Besides, 14 streetlights were put up by the district administration at a cost of Rs 1.4 lakh. Electricity connection was provided on an outlay of Rs 1.29 lakh.

The Minister for Animal Husbandry, P. Geetha Jeevan, and the director of T.M.S.S. Society, Victor Lobo, were present.
