Floral tributes were paid to the bust of Subramania Bharathi at Setupati Higher Secondary School here by people from different walks of life on the occasion of the national poet’s birth anniversary on Tuesday.
I. Mayandi Bharathi, freedom fighter, and R. Thirunavukkarasu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, were among those who participated in a function organised by Bharathi Ilakkiya Peravai. Members of Bharathi Desiya Peravai, led by K. John Moses, State general secretary, Janata Dal (Secular), paid tributes at the school. Students of Madura College Higher Secondary School turned up in the attire of Bharathi at a function organised by Amuthasurabhi Kalai Mandram. Free notebooks and pens were distributed to children by R. Annadurai and R. Sundararajan, MLAs. The meeting, presided over by V. Balakrishnan, appealed to the State Government to initiate steps to have a life-size statue of Bharathi in Madurai.
