A group of Paliyar tribals living at Kumbaraiyur on lower Kodaikanal hill appealed to the district administration to provide a house site to enable their safe living.

The tribal people met Collector M. Vallalar at the Collectorate here on Thursday and handed over a petition to him. “We are living with women and children in an unsafe place near reserve forests facing bone-biting cold and constant threat from wild animals,” they said.

The tribals, in the petition, stated that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, after hearing a writ petition filed on behalf of tribal people in Kodaikanal on October 28, had directed the Collector to take steps for giving house sites to those 25 families in the light of the special enactment of Scheduled Tribe families and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, subject to their eligibility.

The authorities shall also consider providing other amenities such as drinking water, electricity, health care and education facilities to them, it directed and advised the petitioners to file applications before the Collector in this connection.

As per direction of the Madurai Bench, the tribal people had already given a petition to the Collector on November 8, 2010 and again at the grievance day meeting held on December 6, 2010. Pattas were not issued to the tribals till date, they stated.
