Many tribal people in Vellambi hills and the surrounding areas in the district have switched over to Liquefied Petroleum Gas, a positive indicator to reduction of carbon footprint accumulation in the atmosphere and ozone damage.

Marking the development, International Ozone Day was observed in the tribal settlement of Vellambi in Keeriparai by the tribal people on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, S.S. Davidson, environmental educator, said in 2009 the Montreal Protocol became the first United Nations treaty to achieve universal ratification to reduce ozone-depleting substances.

Pamphlets in Tamil were distributed to the participants. The participants were asked to reduce dependency on fossil fuel.
