For the first time, tribals in Pachamalai were given biometric smart cards of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) at a function held at Top Sengattupatti village situated up on the hills on Wednesday.

Launching the smart card scheme, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan distributed the biometric smart cards to 250 tribals. The card could be used by the tribals for drawing old age pension and wages given under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

An official press release here said the IOB had distributed biometric smart cards to 40,000 persons across the district.

The release further said the Collector distributed loans to the tune of Rs.1.06 lakh to 53 persons belonging to the ‘Narikuravar’ community at Madhurapuri village in Thuraiyur taluk for construction of green houses. The loan amount was given by IOB.
